Yes — and here’s how!
Some knitters don’t always work from home. They take their knitting machines to classes, workshops, retreats, or even on vacation. So we often hear this question:
“Can I use my eKnitter if there’s no Wi-Fi around?”
“I often knit in different places and don’t want to ask for the Wi-Fi password every time.”
Good news: Yes, you can use eKnitter without home Wi-Fi.
There are two simple ways to do it — and we’ll walk you through both.
Option 1: Connect Directly to eKnitter (Simple, but limited)
If you reset your eKnitter, it creates its own small Wi-Fi signal. You’ll see it in your Wi-Fi list on your computer or tablet (e.g. “eKnitter-*****”).
- Click on the eKnitter signal to connect
- You can now send patterns and start knitting

❗ But there’s one downside: While connected to eKnitter, your device is no longer connected to the internet. If you want to look something up, download a file, or check your email, you have to disconnect from eKnitter first.
This is okay for quick use — but not ideal for everyday knitting.
Option 2: Use Your Phone as a Hotspot (Best for mobile use)
This is the easier, smoother way: let your phone create a Wi-Fi network that both eKnitter and your device can join.
That way, you can:
- Knit just like at home
- Stay connected to the internet
- Look up things, download files, or get support while knitting
Perfect for:
- Traveling with your machine
- Teaching a class
- Knitting at a friend’s place or community space
How to Use Your Phone as a Hotspot
1. Turn on your phone’s hotspot
- On iPhone: go to Settings → Personal Hotspot, and activate Max Compatibility
- On Android: go to Settings → Hotspot & Tethering, and make sure it uses 2.4 GHz (not 5 GHz)

2. Connect eKnitter to your phone’s hotspot
- In the eKnitter setup screen, enter your phone’s hotspot name and password (instead of your home Wi-Fi)
3. Connect your computer or tablet to the same hotspot
- Now both your computer and your eKnitter are connected to the same network and can work together.
4. Start knitting!
- Send your pattern — and start creating whereever you like
