Knit a swatch

Frosted Flower Jumper – Knit-Along

Start here

You are inrested to join this Knit-Along! Great.

This KAL is completely free; we only ask that you share your progress and support others along the way. This helps us keep the KAL accessible to everyone. Sophie and I put a lot of work into this project, and we’re here to provide any missing or unclear information but we cannot give individual support that is why you need to team up.

In this first step, we ask you to knit a swatch. This will help you confirm if your chosen yarn works well with the project and ensure your machine is suitable for this project.

FAQ

Q1: How many participants are needed to start the knit-along?

We need at least 5 participants to officially begin our knit-along. This initial group helps to establish a community base from which the event can grow.

Q2: What happens if there are fewer than three participants ready to enter the next level in a given week?:

If fewer than three participants are ready to advance in a given week, those who are ready must wait until the following week. We require a minimum of three participants to ensure there’s enough interaction and assistance within the group.

Q3: Is it necessary to keep pace with the group I initially started with?

A3: No, you don’t have to stay with your initial group. People progress at different speeds, and that’s perfectly fine. The knit-along is designed to accommodate varying paces, and we encourage everyone to support each other, regardless of speed.

Q4: What are the requirements for advancing beyond the first entry level?

A4: After the first entry level, which requires a minimum of 5 participants to start, you only need to share your progress to move on to subsequent levels. There is no minimum participant requirement for these later stages.

Q5: How does posting updates help the knit-along?

A5: Posting your updates is crucial as it provides valuable insights and inspiration to others who may be at different stages of the knit-along. Your progress can help guide and motivate newcomers or those who may be struggling

Q6: Can I join the knit-along after it has started?

A6: Absolutely! New participants can join weeky, although they must begin at the first entry level and wait for enough participants to proceed together.

Q7: How long does the Knit Along last after I join?

The duration of the Knit Along is entirely up to you and depends on your personal pace and experience. Everyone’s journey is unique, but the beauty of a Knit Along is learning from one another by sharing progress and tips. We’re all working on the same project, so we can support and inspire each other. Some techniques might work better for some than others, and that’s part of the process! Take your time and enjoy the experience.

What yarn?

For this project, we used FRAYA, 100% wool “Mindful”, with a length of 350 meters per 50 grams skein (approximately 217.48 yards per ounce). The gauge of this yarn accroding describtion is 28 stitches by 42 rows over a 10 x 10 cm square (approximately 4 x 4 inches).

Feel free to use any yarn you prefer, but keep in mind that you gauge needs to be similar to what we used becaue this ensures that you can use the prepared knitting files for this Knit-along.

Materials
  • Yarn: FRAYA, 100% wool “Mindful”
  • Machine: KH 910 with eKnitter (electronic standard-gauge machine that supports patterns across the full needle bed)
  • Carriage tension: 10
Yarn estimation:

FRAYA, 100% wool “Mindful” from Selfmade:
(S) 250- (M) 250- (L) 300- (XL) 300- (XXL) 350- (XXXL) 400 g

Step 1: Create a Swatch with Size M

We knit Size M to create a swatch. This will allow you to test whether your yarn is suitable for this Knit-Along.

  • Carriage Tension: 10

Swatch Dimensions for Size M:

  • Yoke Length: 22 cm (8.7 inches)
  • Pattern Length: 46 cm (18.1 inches)
  • Width at Chest Level: 5.2 cm (2 inches)”

Note: The conversion from centimeters to inches is approximate (1 inch = 2.54 cm).

If you need a different size, don’t worry! Once you qualify for the Knit-Along, all sizes from S to XXXL, along with their corresponding files and detailed descriptions, will be made available.

Instructions:

  1. Cast On:
    • Cast on 125 stitches using waste yarn.
    • Knit a few rows with waste yarn to create a stable base.
  2. Prepare the Machine:
    • Load the selected pattern file into your knitting machine.
    • Ensure the carriage is on the left side (this will also be the side of the yoke).
  3. Mirror the Pattern (if needed):
    • If the yoke is being knitted on the right side, mirror your pattern file before proceeding.
  4. Set the Carriage:
    • Set your carriage to KC II mode and press both Part buttons.
  5. Knit the First Row:
    • Move the carraige from left to right. The needles should now be selected (no knitting).
  6. Begin Knitting the Pattern:
    • Move the carriage from right to left. The machine will now begin knitting the pattern.
  7. Repeat the Pattern:
    • Knit the loaded pattern at least 5 times (120 rows) for accurate results.
  8. Finish the Swatch:
    • Remove the swatch using waste yarn.
    • Measure the yoke length and gauge for accuracy.
  9. Wash the swatch and measure

Step 3: Measure your swatch

Wash your swatch before you measure it. The yarn required for this Knit-Along needs to meet a specific gauge.

Please compare your total length, yoke length, and the pattern width at chest level.

In our example, we knitted the pattern five times to achieve the most accurate gauge measurement. Keep in mind that the gauge in the middle of the swatch is the most accurate, as the edges tend to roll.

For this Knit-Along, it is essential to use yarn with a similar gauge. Using yarn with a different gauge will require alternate pattern files, which are not supported in this Knit-Along.

Swatch is finished or you need more support:

Once you’ve finished knitting your test swatch, you’re ready to join the KAL! Post your swatch in the “KAL – Progress Board.” We’ll be reviewing entries each week on Sunday and will admit new KAL participants accordingly. We hope to see you there.

If you need support, please use the belonging discussion board to get in contact with other KAL participants. We will frequently check to see if we can make the knit-along description more precise.
